Kashif: A Modern, Spurless Font Family
The Kashif font was born from a desire to bring balance between humanist warmth and geometric precision. Inspired by Ubuntu, Kashif aims to merge friendliness and modernity, two qualities essential for today’s digital needs.
Throughout its development, we focused not only on letterforms but also on the user experience. From the very beginning, we asked ourselves: how can a typeface remain legible on small screens without losing its visual character? That question guided every design decision we made.
Background
Modern design demands typography that is adaptive, accessible, and consistent across multiple platforms. Many classic Latin fonts are not yet optimized for digital display, particularly in web and app interfaces. Kashif seeks to bridge that gap.
Our initial research revealed a growing demand for humanist-style Latin fonts that perform efficiently on screens. Global trends also highlight the importance of readability and clarity across resolutions, forming the foundation of Kashif’s design direction.
As a reference point, Ubuntu served as our starting inspiration. Known for its balance of simplicity and warmth, Ubuntu embodies two principles we also implemented in Kashif. We studied its terminals, x-height proportions, and rhythm in depth to understand what makes it so approachable.
The design process began with manual sketches on paper, followed by the creation of a digital moodboard. We experimented with different stroke weights and soft curves to maintain a friendly yet professional tone suitable for diverse design contexts.
By choosing a clean, proportional Latin structure, we ensured that Kashif could later be harmonized with Arabic scripts. Our vision is to build an inclusive, flexible, and future-ready typographic system for bilingual and multicultural projects.
Creative Process
The creation of Kashif was an exploratory journey that blended artistic intuition with technical precision. Each stage was designed to maintain balance between visual expression and typographic functionality. The process spanned from initial sketches to the refined final form through continuous experimentation, testing, and iteration.
1. Sketches
The process began with freehand sketches, capturing the organic rhythm and emotional tone of each letter. This stage allowed unrestricted experimentation with shapes, rhythm, and personality, laying a foundation for further development.
The selected sketches were then digitized using Glyphs, where each curve and proportion was refined to achieve harmony between aesthetic and function. This stage went beyond mere tracing; it was about distilling the expressive essence of the original hand-drawn forms.
The digital outcomes were carefully analyzed for geometric precision, alignment, and inter-character consistency. This step marked the transition from spontaneous creativity to structured design, ensuring that Kashif retained its unique personality while remaining legible in any context.

2. Letterform Experimentation
Once the base structure was established, the focus shifted to proportion and stroke contrast. The team explored various line thicknesses, vertical-to-horizontal balances, and terminal variations to achieve a harmonious visual rhythm.
The relationships between letters were tested to ensure that each character functioned beautifully both individually and in longer text. Micro-adjustments were made to curves, apertures, and crossbars to maintain an organic flow and prevent rigidity.
Through this process, Kashif developed a distinct identity—soft, humanist, yet structurally firm. The typeface became not just a collection of letters, but a living visual system responsive to its environment.
3. Weight Variations
Kashif started with three main weights which is Thin, Regular, and Black to ensure flexibility across various design uses. Each weight was refined to maintain proportional harmony, even when combined within the same layout.
Extensive testing ensured that key characteristics such as vertical rhythm, terminal forms, and stroke contrast remained consistent across all styles. Smooth transitions between weights were crucial to preserving visual harmony.
As a result, Kashif performs strongly in headlines, elegantly in body text, and seamlessly in both print and digital contexts. Its design consistency makes it a reliable choice for professionals seeking a versatile and cohesive type family.

4. Readability
Readability testing was an essential phase to guarantee Kashif’s performance across media. Trials were conducted on both digital screens (apps and web interfaces) and printed materials like books and magazines.
The results helped identify areas for refinement such as letter spacing, thin stroke rendering, and visual contrast in small sizes. The goal was to ensure maximum reading comfort without compromising aesthetic character.
Kashif was also tested in real-world use cases by designers and editors, assessing its behavior under different screen lighting, resolutions, and print qualities. This ensured consistent typographic performance across diverse platforms.
Font Structure & Letter Anatomy
Kashif’s structure was designed with a focus on clarity and visual personality. Every typographic element was carefully composed to produce a steady rhythm, balanced proportions, and comfortable legibility across both print and digital environments.
1. Foundations and Letter Proportion
Kashif’s anatomy is built upon a precise system of baseline, x-height, ascender, and descender. These elements establish vertical balance and reading rhythm, ensuring that long paragraphs remain visually stable.
Its proportions blend geometric discipline with humanist warmth. Vertical and horizontal strokes are firm yet fluid, allowing the letters to appear natural while maintaining sharpness. This hybrid approach enhances adaptability across screen sizes.
In digital contexts, the proportions were fine-tuned to prevent distortion. Repeated testing ensured that Kashif maintains consistent form across web interfaces, mobile displays, and high-resolution print outputs.
2. Visual Details and Anatomical Elements

Components such as stems, terminals, serifs, and counters were refined through layered adjustments. Vertical strokes were made solid and confident, while terminal curves were softened slightly to add friendliness to the text appearance.
Elements like bowls, apertures, and crossbars were adjusted for legibility at various reading distances, vital for maintaining comfort on high-contrast digital displays.
Kashif’s visual approach prioritizes clarity without sacrificing personality. Each letterform carries a sense of modern expressiveness, reflecting a design philosophy that unites function with contemporary aesthetics.
3. Latin–Arabic Integration
For the upcoming Arabic version, particular attention is given to the Arabic baseline, dot system, and ligatures commonly used in modern calligraphy. Adjustments ensure natural flow while preserving the authenticity of Arabic forms.
Each Arabic character is designed with consideration for its initial, medial, and final shapes—maintaining dynamic rhythm without disrupting harmony between the Latin and Arabic scripts.
By aligning x-height, stroke weight, and curvature dynamics, both writing systems achieve visual harmony when used side by side. This integration positions Kashif as a strong foundation for bilingual and cross-cultural typography.
Font Features & Specifications
Basic characters of Kashif
Kashif was designed using a modular and adaptive system, allowing users to employ it across various digital design needs. Available in TTF, OTF, WOFF, and WOFF2, it ensures compatibility with all major platforms.
Each style such as Light, Regular, and Bold was tested to maintain rhythmic and proportional consistency. The automatic kerning system ensures balanced spacing, especially in dense text compositions such as editorials and digital UIs.
Kashif includes OpenType features like ligatures and contextual alternates that enhance text fluidity. Users can see the difference visually through examples on the product page.
Manual hinting ensures sharp rendering on low-resolution screens. Testing confirms Kashif remains clear and legible at various sizes, from mobile interfaces to responsive web layouts.

Pre-release
Before reaching its final release, Kashif underwent extensive font testing to ensure its stability, readability, and consistency across different environments. This phase verified that the typeface performs flawlessly in both print and digital contexts.
Testing began by evaluating glyph rendering and spacing across various screen resolutions, operating systems, and software platforms. Subtle adjustments were made to kerning pairs, hinting precision, and baseline alignment to maintain legibility in all scenarios.
Next, typographic balance and rhythm were assessed through multi-language text samples. Each letter’s relationship with its neighbors was tested in paragraphs, headlines, and captions, ensuring that Kashif remains visually cohesive at any scale.
Finally, continuous iteration and peer review from type designers validated Kashif’s technical quality. Feedback from professional testers helped refine stroke weights, optical balance, and OpenType behavior, resulting in a stable and reliable final release.
